Otherland Series

About a year and a half ago, I started a series called Otherland by Tad Williams.  I had never read any of his work before, but it came highly recommended by my cousin.  The first book, title City of Golden Shadow, took longer than expected to read, but I will chalk that up to the fact that I was taking writing classes at the time and spent the majority of my time writing.  In fact, that was when I realized I wanted to write, anyways.  The book was quite good, though slow at first.  The problem was, I was in the middle of reading the Dark Tower series by Stephen King at the time, so I had planned to get back to Otherland once I was finished that series.  It never happened.  I also stopped writing around that time.  I was working on a book called Death Lies Beyond, but scrapped it about 10 chapters in.  I enjoyed the premise, but I don't think I was cut out to be writing a Sci-Fi book that relied heavily on future technology.  One thing I learned, I am definitely not a Futurist.

Again, I get off topic.  I have been meaning to go back to Otherland, but it seems like too many other books presented themselves.  I wanted to read different authors to see their styles.  After I finished Dark Tower VII, I thought I would try a James Patterson book.  I think my mother has read everyone he has ever written, so I wanted to see why her, like so many others, found his books so addictive.  The first thing I noticed was the the chapters were like 2 pages long and there was 200.  Though the book was around 300 pages, there appeared to be a lot of blank pages and white space.  Anyways, I never did finish the book, not because I didn't enjoy it, but because there was a book in particular I wanted to get to.  I had been waiting a long time to get to Pillars of the Earth and it was well worth it.  But I will save that for another blog post. My fiance then told me about a new show coming out called A Game of Thrones.  I knew I had the book as I had received it as a Christmas gift, so that moved it to the top of my list, pushing Otherland back again.  I thought, ok just this one and then back to Otherland, but if you have read my other posts, you know it didn't work out like that.

So where I am now is, I am reading a fantasy series, I am writing a fantasy book, so what I think will happen is that I will discover another fantasy series and Otherland will get left behind again.  Perhaps for even another year or two.  I will return to it one day, I just don't know when.
